Martha Lane Fox, the government-appointed UK Digital Champion, has launched Go ON UK, a initiative to bring internet access to every individual, and web prescence to every company, in the UK. The project has the support of the BBC, Age UK, E.ON, Lloyds Banking Group, Post Office, TalkTalk, and the National Lotterys BIG Fund. Representatives from each company, along with Mike Bracken, executive director of the Government Digital Service, will sit on the Go ON UK board for the first 18 months.
“The UK leads the world in most indicators of digital capability. The internet contributes more to our GDP than to that of any other G20 country, and is predicted to grow 11 per cent a year to reach £221bn by 2016,” says Lane Fox. “However, many individuals and organisations still struggle to exploit the broader benefits of technology. Go ON UK has a vision to make the UK the world’s most digitally capable nation where no one, and no organisation – even the smallest – is left behind.”
