Layar Triumphs at the Getties

Independent app store GetJar has unveiled the winners of the Gettie Awards, which celebrate the best applications across all major platforms.

The awards attracted 7,000 nominations from more than100 countries. iPhone accounted for 26 per cent of nominations, Android 20 per cent, Java 18 per cent, Symbian 15 per cent, Blackberry 13 per cent, and Windows Mobile, 9 per cent. Winners from seven categories were determined by a manual review the applications, with judges casting their votes to decide on the overall Gettie Award winner.

The winners are:
Best Java application: WaveSecure Backup

Best Windows Mobile application: Opera Mini

Best Blackberry application: Kayak Flight/Hotel Search
Helps you compare hundreds of travel sites at once, organize your itinerary and track your flights

Best iPhone application: Tap Tap Revenge 3
Offers access to over 100 free songs and 100 premium bundles of music rhythm games.

Best Android application: Lookout
Helps identify and block security threats, backs up and restores a user’s personal data, and can quickly find a lost or stolen phone by pinpointing its location on a Google map or sounding a loud alarm.
