Digital newsstand app lekiosk has launched in the UK, enabling British users to browse, sample and purchase titles from publishers including the BBC, Condè Nast, and Dennis on their iPads.
In France, lekiosk – which uses a business model which gives users the option to subscribe to a €10 monthly bundle of 10 magazines – is installed on approximately one of every four iPads, and is the highest grossing iPad app in the French App Store.
“The magazine industry is undergoing the same shift we saw in the music industry a few years ago – tomorrow’s magazine consumers are going to be doing their reading on tablet screens,” says Michael Philippe, co-founder of LeKiosk. “Most publishers have already realised that it’s in their interest to make their content available to these upwardly mobile consumers because they’ll be able to offer them the same rich visual experience, but in a much more convenient way.”
According to consumer research commissioned by LeKiosk, five per cent of Brits are already reading magazines on their Tablets – but the idea appeals to as many as 36 per cent.
