Japanese OTT messaging app Line has reached 10m users in India, three months after launching in the country.
The company says it intends to become Indias top communication app, following a marketing push which includes a partnership with Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif who, as a brand ambassador, will appear in an upcoming TV campaign as well as in exclusive stickers in-app.
“India has overtaken Japan to become the country with the third largest number of smartphone users. It is only natural to anticipate further growth of the smartphone market in India, and we believe that it will become a vital territory as Line expands into the global marketplace’, said our CEO, Akira Morikawa . “Since launching in India in July 2013, the number of users has skyrocketed, far exceeding our expectations. We haven’t experienced such rapid growth in any other countries to date.”
Line has also partnered with Sony India to preinstall the app on its Xperia Z1 and Xperia C handsets, along with a co-operative marketing campaign, and major Bollywood films including Krrish 3 and DHOOM:3.
