McDonald’s and PayPal are partnering for a mobile payments trial in France, according to reports from Reuters. In the 30 fast food restaurants taking part in the pilot, customers will be able to place their order online or using a McDonalds app, and pay for it with PayPal.
A PayPal mobile payments service was demonstrated at this years McDonalds franchisee conference, as part of a showcase of technology intended for roll out within two years.
Clearly, big brands are starting to turn their eye to mobile payments – Starbucks has recently partnered with mobile payment platform Square for a similar scheme, and Wal-Mart, Target and 7-Eleven have announced theyre working together on the development of a mobile wallet. But, if rolled out globally across McDonalds 30,000 restaurants, this partnership could be the one to bring mobile payments into the mainstream – and cement PayPal as the primary platform in this still-nascent space.
