McDonald’s rebrands to ‘WcDonald’s’ to bring anime fictional restaurant to life

McDonald’s has leaned into anime fandom by launching its ‘WcDonalds’ campaign, bringing the fictional fast-food restaurant to real life, in partnership with creative agency Wieden+Kennedy.

‘WcDonald’s’. which features an upside-down Golden Arches logo, was created by anime show creators to reference the fast food chain without being sued and has now been launched to include a new sauce, manga-inspired packaging and four short anime episodes.

Starting next week [26 February 2024], WcDonald’s packaging will feature illustrations from manga artist and former illustrator for DC Comics, Acky Bright.

This packaging will feature a QR code and will direct customers to digital expressions of manga characters Bright created for the campaign, which will run in over 30 countries.

McDonalds USA Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer, Tariq Hassan, said: “Anime is a huge part of today’s culture, and we love that our fans have been inviting us into the conversation for years.

“The WcDonald’s universe is a reflection of what fans have created. It honours their vision and celebrates their creativity, while authentically bringing it to life in our restaurants for the first time ever.”
