McDonalds to Introduce NFC mPayments In-store by 15 September

McDonalds signMcDonald’s is planning to roll out an NFC-based mobile payments system in the next fortnight, according to an internal memo leaked to 9to5Mac.

“Restaurants must be set up and trained to accept mobile payments by September 15,” reads the memo, which also mentions that McDonalds will be using VeriFone hardware to accept the payments.

The timing of this launch is particularly notable given the rumoured inclusion of NFC functionality in the forthcoming iPhone 6, to be announced on 9 September, which many are tipping as the watershed moment for the technology.

Bank Innovation also reports that Apple is in talks with US department store Nordstrom over a soon-to-be-launched payments platform – though whether this will be NFC-enabled remains to be seen.
