mCommerce sales were up 136 per cent year-on-year in June 2013, according to data from the IMRG Capgemini eRetail Sales Index. The mCommerce Index was up eight per cent on May 2013.
Mobile conversion rates also grew – from 1.3 per cent in June 2012 to 2.0 per cent in June 2013. This increase can mostly be attributed to the influence of tablets, which are included in the figures.
“The mCommerce Index remains strong as consumer confidence in purchasing goods and services via smartphones and tablets continue to grow,” said Chris Webster, head of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini. “The findings provide further evidence of the value mobile technologies have brought to the retail sector as consumers continue to shop via this channel.”
Meanwhile, online retail sales overall saw an year-on-year growth of 20 per cent – the highest recorded in two years – and a monthly growth of 2.4 per cent, the first time theres been a rise between May and June in five years. However, basket size shrank from £87 last June to £79.
