Merge Games shuts down weeks after layoffs

Merge Games is shutting down, just weeks after a round of layoffs and the closure of its office.

The independent publisher shared the news in a statement on social media.

The statement read: “We couldn’t have done it without people passionate about indie games, from all of our developers all the way to… the players.

“If you see someone from Merge, just know that they’re an incredible person that worked their hardest.”

Founded in 2009, Merge Games initially focused on the physical distribution of indie games, including titles like Dead Cells, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, and Frostpunk.

In early September, it was revealed that Maximum Entertainment, the parent company of Merge Games, had closed the publisher’s Chelford office and laid off several employees as part of a consolidation plan.

At the time of the closure, Merge Games had a staff of 22.
