If you loved Whatsapp, you’ll love this. I use the past tense, because MessageMe is available now for free on iOS and Android app and it looks like it’s going to be huge. It had 1m users just 10 days after launch and 5m after 75 days.
Combining all the best bits of Whatsapp, Draw Something, and soon to include (most likely paid-for) stickers à la Japan’s Line messaging app and some sort of Pingit-style payments, MessageMe is a souped up multimedia toolbox. Users can also send audio, video – from YouTube, stored on your phone or just taken – text, and search music tracks to send.
The company has just raised $10m after an investment round led by ex-Mozilla CEO John Lilly of Greylock partners. The VC firm has invested in more than 30 start-ups, including Dropbox. The lean team, which has only grown from four to 10 during its short lifetime, got seed investment from True Ventures in San Francisco. This accelerator has funded the early stages of companies like Kiip, About.me and Send.It, which was bought by Yahoo earlier this year.
A blog from the four co-founders, Alex, Arjun, Justin and Vivek, said: “We’ve got some groundbreaking additions in the pipeline, aiming to change the way we look at communication happening in our world. We’re excited to help lead a team that pushes the envelope on what’s possible, while focusing on first-class products.”
