Meta’s Threads hits 175m users in one year

Meta’s latest social media platform, Threads, has reached 175 million monthly active users in one year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed.

Just shy of its first anniversary, the social media platform launched on 5 July 2023, in a bid to compete with X, formerly Twitter.

As a result, the app quickly passed 100 million users within a week, aided by the seamless sign-up process for Instagram users. However, some of these early adopters eventually became inactive.

In a post, Zuckerberg said: “Threads now has more than 175M monthly actives. What a year.”

However, unlike Meta’s other platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, Threads has not yet revealed its daily active user numbers.

The news comes as Meta recently temporarily suspended Threads in Turkey following an order from the Turkish Competition Authority (TCA).

The technology giant announced the shutdown in response to the trade body issuing an interim order that prevented data sharing between Threads and Instagram, a decision which Meta disagreed with.
