Metro Launches Tablet Edition

Metro, the UK’s only free urban national newspaper, has launched Metro Tablet Edition for the iPad. Users can download and subscribe to the app for free from Apple’s App Store to view national and world news, sport and features as well as video and photo galleries. Each edition contains the articles and features from the paper that have been designed to give the best interactive experience for iPad users.

Each edition of the Metro Tablet Edition will be available to download from Monday to Friday at 4am. It will also be available in Apple’s Newsstand feature, which means users will be able to subscribe for free and have each edition downloaded automatically overnight.

The app features regular slots such as Guilty Pleasures and 60 Second Interview, as well as several new features such as Window on the World – a selection of full screen images from various news stories – and a new interactive map linking through to international stories on the World Digest section. The Metro Tablet Edition has launched with a range of advertisers, including Specsavers, Blockbuster, TMobile, Orange, Natwest, Universal Pictures and DFS.

“We are determined to enable our audience to read and enjoy Metro wherever and whenever it suits them, and the Tablet Edition is our latest digital product launch to help us achieve that goal,” says Jamie Walters, executive director of digital at Metro. “It’s very exciting to be both the only national free daily newspaper in the UK, but also the only free daily publication within Newsstand,  and we look forward to finding out what our users think of Metro in this format.

“This is not a website-like product. It is very much a daily edition, designed to replicate the paper reading experience on a device built for consuming high quality media. We believe we have produced a product that takes full advantage of this giving maximum value to both consumers and to advertisers.”
