Microsoft Cracks Down on Rogue Advertisers

AdwareMicrosoft’s malware team has changed its criteria around identifying and dealing with rogue companies that create unwanted adware downloads for Internet Explorer.

The company is now emphasising choice and control for its users. Advertiers must ensure they show in an obvious way how to close an ad, include the name of the programme that created it and offer a standard uninstall method.

Microsoft is also changing its response tactic by stopping a programme where malware is detected immediately until the user opts in, rather than allowing it to run unless they opt out.

“We understand advertising is part of the modern computing experience,” a blog from Michael Johnson at Microsoft said. “However, we want to give our customers choice and control regarding what happens with their computers.”

Weve reached out to Microsoft to find out how these changes might affect IE mobile users.
