Microsoft shuts down DEI team due to ‘changing business needs’

Microsoft has reportedly shut down one of its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) teams.

According to IGN, an internal email from a former team leader indicated that the staff reductions occurred on 1 July due to “changing business needs.”

As a result, the email further commends the DEI teams at the technology giant, stating that “impossible mountains were moved” during their tenure and applauding the “brilliant, ethical, and world-class strategists at the company who have helped make the world a better place.”

Despite the exact number of affected employees being unknown, a team leader allegedly accused executive leadership of being “investigated and [having] evidenced discrimination, harassment, and toxicity” in the email.

However, in response to to the report, a Microsoft spokesperson, Jeff Jones said: “Our D&I commitments remain unchanged.

“Our focus on diversity and inclusion is unwavering and we are holding firm on our expectations, prioritising accountability, and continuing to focus on this work.”

Microsoft has been implementing widespread layoffs this year, including 1,900 employees from its games division in January.
