Microsoft has introduced a phone sign-in feature that means no more passwords for its accounts.

The phone sign-in works through the Microsoft Authenticator app, where users add their account. Once they have added the account, whenever they sign in somewhere new, they will receive a notification on their phone. To complete the sign in process, they simply tap ‘approve’ on the notification and will be access their account in the new location.

“We’ve been hard at work creating a modern way to sign in that doesn’t require upper and lowercase letters, numbers, a special character, and your favourite emoji. And after a soft launch last month, we’re excited to announce the GA our newest sign-in feature: phone sign-in for Microsoft accounts,” said Alex Simons, director of program management at Microsoft’s identity division, in a blog post.

“This process is easier than standard two-step verification and significantly more secure than only a password, which can be forgotten, phished, or compromised.”

The phone sign-in is available to both Android and iOS users. Microsoft says it will evaluate whether it will add support to Windows Phone depending on the levels of success it achieves on those two platforms.
