Microsoft Purchases Calendar App for $100m

sunrise comboMicrosoft has acquired popular calendar app Sunrise for around $100m (£65.6m) as part of its efforts to shore up its enterprise credentials and reach out to consumers on other platforms.

Sunrise is an extremely popular app, praised for its clean design and ability to import calendar details from iCloud, Google Calendar and Exchange, as well as contact details from LinkedIn profiles.

The acquisition comes hot on the heels of Microsofts release of a new Outlook app for Android and iOS, based heavily on Acompli, an email app it acquired for $200m in December. Many speculate that Sunrises capabilities could be integrated into Microsofts existing calendar software in a similar manner.

According to TechCrunch, Sunrise will continue to exist as a standalone app for the foreseeable future, although the purchase definitely indicates that Microsoft is attempting to strengthen its range of mobile tools in areas where it has traditionally performed well on desktops.
