All eyes are currently on Cupertino for Apples iPhone press event, kicking off at 6pm British time today (watch the site for our coverage), but the next major hardware announcement is already on its way.
Microsoft has sent out press invitations to a New York event, taking place on 23 September, unveiling its next generation of Surface tablets. Expect the rumour mill to ramp up over the next couple of weeks with further details as they leak, but for now speculation suggests that the tablets will only see minor changes. 
The original Surface, which launched last year, hasnt been a roaring success – in the first five months after launch, Microsoft only sold 1.5m units – but the company has made it clear, following that it intends to make a major push into hardware.
