Mobile Ad Revenue Following Twitter, Not Facebook, says eMarketer

When it comes to mobile ad revenues, Twitter is the top social network, according to an eMarketer report – beating out Facebook, in spite of its larger user count.

In the US, Twitter will earn $129.7m (£81.3m) in mobile ad revenues this year, according to the report, while Facebooks mobile ads will amount to just over half that, at $72.7m. But eMarketer predicts that Facebooks revenues will grow faster, outpacing Twitter by the end of next year.

Growth of the mobile ad market will push total mobile ad revenues in the US to a predicted $2.6bn by the end of the year, says eMarketer – and to nearly $12bn by 2016.

While Twitter is doing a good job of driving up its revenues from the channel – as is online radio service Pandora, which recently announced that two-thirds of its ad revenues come from mobile, pulling in an estimated $226.4bn by the end of the year – the undisputed king of mobile advertising is still Google.

Google holds a projected 54.5 per cent share of net revenues from mobile advertising this year, which will shrink slightly, but not considerably, as more players enter the market. Last year, Google pulled in $750m in mobile ad revenues, which is projected to nearly double this year, to $1.4bn – and, eMarketer, close in on $3.6bn by 2014.
