Virtual handset testing provider Mobile Complete has raised $9 million (4.6 million) in Series B funding from Motorola Ventures and Innovacom. The company says it aims to expand its DeviceAnywhere web-based virtual development lab, which currently allows over 650 global clients to test applications on any handset, without having to physically purchase hundreds of handsets.
With around 2,000 handset models currently operating in the global marketplace, according to analyst In-Stat, consumers have more options than ever to find the right model that suits their lifestyle. Unfortunately for mobile content developers worldwide, this variety has proved to be an economic curse, as handset proliferation has increased production and porting costs to make an application work for every possible and potential consumer.
Mobile Completes answer to the problem is its Direct-to-Device technology, which provides access to, and interaction with, real mobile devices connected to live global networks. The Internet brings these remote devices and networks directly to users desktops. Through a simple desktop interface, users can press device buttons, view LCD displays and listen to ringers and speakers.
The solution, and its economic impact on the mobile development industry, has caught the eye of Motorola Ventures. The Series B investment by Motorola and Innovacom will fuel the expansion of the DeviceAnywhere suite of products, where over 650 developers and enterprises are currently creating a virtual development and testing lab with handsets, connected to live networks, accessible to developers from everywhere in the world.
Mobile Completes unique value proposition is their ability to provide easy web-based access to real mobile devices that are connected to live networks, says Motorola Ventures Managing Director, Reese Schroeder. Their product set is very well aligned with Motorolas business, both from a handset as well as a mobile application perspective. In addition, the immense market traction they have demonstrated over the past couple of years speaks volumes about the expected success of this company.
For Mobile Complete, CEO Faraz Syed says the investment will enable the company to aggressively ramp up our solutions on a global basis.
