Mozilla will be releasing low-cost smartphones running its Firefox OS, for as little as $25 (£15), in India and Indonesia later this year.
The company has previously worked with the likes of ZTE and LG to launch entry-level handsets in Europe and Latin America, around the $60 mark, but its hoping to drive down prices even further.
“$1 means a lot of things to consumers in emerging countries,” Mozilla COO Gong Li told the Wall Street Journal. “Its difficult to sell smartphones that cost more than $50 in those markets.”
To make cheaper handsets possible, Mozilla has partnered with Chinese chip maker Spreadtrum and Indian manufacturers Intex and Spice.
