Mr Robot Hacks into Comic Con with VR Simulcast

Mr RobotWith the annual San Diego Comic-Con taking place this week, USA Network is promoting its TV show Mr Robot at the event through a VR simulcast.

A 12-minute VR video, written and directed by Mr Robot creator Sam Esmail and produced in partnership with Here Be Dragons, will be shown to Comic Con attendees and users of the Within app globally in a one-off broadcast.

Whether attending the event or watching along at home, users have to install the Within app on mobile or for Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, and download the content in advance, which will then unlock and play simultaneously across all devices at 10:45am (PST). Once it has been shown, the video will disappear from the platform.

Attendees to the Mr Robot event at Comic Con will be given custom Google Cardboard viewers, and the first 2,5000 will also receive branded headphones.

USA Network has also partnered with Uber to enable Comic Con attendees to request the VR kit and experience, delivered in a themed repair van, through the taxi-booking app.

As you might expect from a TV programme about hacking and internet culture, this isnt the only digital campaign running to promote the forthcoming second season of Mr Robot. Earlier this week, USA Network launched an emoji keyboard app for iOS and Android featuring characters and assorted paraphernalia from the show.

Don’t forget to enter the Effective Mobile Marketing Awards. The Early Bird deadline for submissions is 22 July. More details here.
