mTicket to Ride

Mobile ticketing company Masabi Transit has signed a deal with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to bring mobile ticketing to commuters this Autumn. Via iOS, Android and BlackBerry apps, customers will be able to purchase rail tickets and passes, and display them directly via the screen of their handset.

“With this new and innovative approach, we are putting a ticket machine right in the palms of our customers’ hands,” said acting MBTA general manager Jonathan Davis.

The solution is intended to help the MBTA reduce costs by eliminating the need for additional ticket vending machines – currently, less than half of stations have the machines – and lowering cash handling costs. All mobile tickets will feature barcodes which can be scanned by smartphone-equipped conductors, to help combat fare evasion.
