MWC: Yahoo News Digest Launches in the UK

Yahoo news digest UKYahoo News Digest, created after the companys buyout of UK teenager Nick DAloisios Summly, has launched in the UK.

Announced at Mobile World Congress, the news aggregation app gives the UKs iOS users access to twice-daily curated news ‘atoms’ made up of summarised content from across the web.

The atoms include maps, infographics, stock tickers, Wikipedia extracts, videos, photos, and quotes, along with new weather and statistics units. The app uses algorithms to identify stories, which are then editorially curated by the Yahoo team.

The News Digest was first announced for US users at CES. It’s the first service designed by Nick D’Aloisio, now a Yahoo product manager, whose company, Summly, Yahoo bought for a reported $30m (£19.8m) in March 2012. DAloisio, now product manager for mobile and emerging products, said he is proud to bring the app to his home country.

Yahoos products are much more widely-used in the US, so the company is hoping to grow its audience in the UK with this launch. The app is live in the App Store now.
