NatWest GetCash Gets Withdrawn

[img_assist|nid=21410|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=150|height=150]NatWest has suspended a feature of its app which allowed customers to get cash without needing their debit card.

The GetCash service launched in June on iOS, Android and Blackberry, but has been temporarily withdrawn after security concerns from customers who had received phishing emails asking for bank details.

GetCash enabled users to take out up to £100 at a time without needing a bank card. Customers phoned a number, accessible through the app, and answered some security questions to get a shortcode, which could then be entered at an ATM within three hours to withdraw cash. The code could also be sent to friends via text. A relatively small number of people had used the service, according to a NatWest spokesperson, as it was a recent addition to mobile banking options.

A statement from NatWest said: “We are aware of an increase in fraudsters targeting customers with phishing attacks to gain access to the GetCash service. We have currently disabled the GetCash service while we increase the level of security required. We will enable the service again once this change is complete.”

Any customers who have lost money will be refunded. People who receive emails asking for private data should not reply and should contact the bank.
