Nearly Half of US Mobile Users are Smartphone Owners

More than 110m people in US now own smartphones, according to the latest figures from comScore’s MobiLens service – an increase of 4 per cent since March. Thats nearly half of the entire US mobile userbase, which reached 234m during the period.

Samsung held its position as the leading handset manufacturer in the US for the three month period ending June 2012, with a 25.6 per cent market share. Thats actually a slight slip, down from 26 per cent last time round, but it still holds a solid lead, with LG coming in second with 18.8 per cent and Apple in third with 15.4 per cent.

As the leading position of Samsung and LG might suggest, Android continues to be the biggest OS in the US, with a 51.6 per cent market share – a slight growth, up 0.6 per cent over March. In second place, iOS grew more substantially, up 1.7 per cent, up to a share of 32.4 per cent. That growth was matched almost exactly by RIMs fall in market share, down 1.6 per cent to 10.6 per cent.

The MobiLens stats also look at mobile content usage. The amount of people doing each of the six examined activities went up – even use of SMS, with a full 75 per cent of mobile subscribers now texting each other. The biggest growth was listening to music on a mobile – up 2.3 per cent, to a total 27.6 per cent of subscribers. Use of apps, which three months ago hit the halfway mark, rose to 51.4 per cent over the period.
