Nest Reveals Connected Security Camera

nest camAround a year ago, Google-owned smart home company Nest acquired Dropcam, the connected home-monitoring camera startup. Now, the firm has unveiled its own design that owes a lot to Dropcams previous work, but works within the companys smart home ecosystem.

The Nest Cam boasts 1080p quality video with eight built-in infrared LEDs for night vision recording. It has a built-in tripod mount and a magnetic base, enabling it to be mounted on fridges or other metallic surfaces, as well as a wall mount.

The camera connects with an accompanying app, enabling owners to monitor its 130 degree wide-angle view on the go, and the device sends alerts when it detects unusual motion or noise around the house.

Nest Aware, one of the companys solutions, uses advanced algorithms to prevent things like changes in light and shadow, or things like blowing branches or birds outside windows sending false alarms to uses, and also enables owners to send voice commands to keep pets off of furniture, for example.

The device can connect with other Nest products, for example automatically recording should a Nest smoke detector go off, or switching off when your smart thermostat senses you returning home.

As well as streaming live footage, owners can store video on a cloud-based DVR; however, this service costs extra depending on how much of an archive you want to keep, with 30 days of footage costing $30 (£19) a month.

The device will begin shipping at the end of the month, and retails for $199.
