New Yorker Uncovrs its Innovators Issue with AR Collaboration

New Yorker ARThe New Yorker magazine has partnered with Uncovr to create its first AR (Augmented Reality) cover.

When scanned using the Uncovr app, the front and back covers of the magazines Innovators Issue reveal an animated three-dimensional cityscape, designed by cover artist Christoph Niemann.

“If you create a world on paper, you create a window,” said Niemann. “Usually, you just break the surface with your mind, but you always have the feeling of: what if you could step into that world or if something could come out of it?”

The New Yorker is hardly the first publication to implement AR in this way, but its notable just because the technology, which has been dismissed as a gimmick in the past, initially seems at odds with the magazines prestigious – and potentially even stuffy – reputation.
