Nike debuts phone-controlled self-lacing shoe

Nike Adapt BBNike has unveiled the latest version of its self-lacing trainers – this time controlled via a smartphone rather than a physical button to make the trainers lace themselves.

The sportswear giant first debuted its self-lacing footwear back in 2016. The next generation of those trainers is the Nike Adapt BB basketball shoe.

Users are able to customise the fit of the shoe and control it through the accompanying smartphone app, which also shares data that can be shared with Nike. It has been designed to enable players to input different fit settings depending on different moments of a game. In addition, when a person steps into the Nike Adapt BB, a custom motor and gear will sense the tension needed by the foot and adjust accordingly.

“We picked basketball as the first sport for Nike Adapt intentionally because of the demands that athletes put on their shoes,” said Eric Avar, VP creative director of innovation at Nike. “During a normal basketball game the athlete’s foot changes and the ability to quickly change your fit by loosening your shoe to increase blood flow and then tighten again for performance is a key element that we believe will improve the athlete’s experience.”

The Nike Adapt BB will go on sale in the US on 17 February and cost $350.
