Nokia has refuted suggestions that it may be planning to launch Android handsets. In a blog post, the firm’s head of mobile solutions, Anssi Vanjoki, writes that “Symbian and MeeGo are the best software for our smartest devices”, adding that Nokia has no plans to use any other software. Explicitly, Vanjoki states: “Despite rumors to the contrary, there are no plans to introduce an Android device from Nokia.”
Vanjoki says he is “obsessed” with getting Nokia back to being number one in high-end devices. And while he accepts that some of the criticism aimed at Symbian recently has been fair, he notes that it still accounts for more than two-fifths of the global smartphone market. And while Symbian gears up to compete with the likes of iPhone and Android, he says that MeeGo is taking clear aim at the computing space.
“The current phase of MeeGo development is looking awesome,” says Vanjoki. “We believe it will power the computers of the future. And the computers of the future will not be tied to a desk or even a lap – they will fit in your pocket.”
Vanjoki concludes his piece with an admission that: “as a challenger now, we have a fight on our hands”. He says: “The first battle is to bring you products and services you will want to own and use, to inspire you to create and do new things in this ever changing digital world. I’m ready to take this challenge on, and so is the entire Nokia team.”
