Ofcom to Convert Digital TV Spectrum for Mobile Broadband

UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has announced that it will make new spectrum available for mobile broadband services, as demand grows exponentially.
The 700 MHz frequency band, currently used for digital terrestrial TV services like Freeview, as well as wireless microphones, will be freed up by the beginning of 2022 at the latest.
Ofcom is also working to release new spectrum at other frequencies that could be used for mobile broadband. Spectrum in the 2.3 GHz and 3.4 GHz bands will be auctioned in late 2015 or early 2016. 
“This is a crucial next step in the development of the UKs communications infrastructure,” said Ofcom chief exec Ed Richards. “This decision ensures that we are making the raw materials available with which investors and companies can build the services which will support the digital economy of the future.”
