OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform) and the NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Networks) Alliance have announced plans to work together to enhance the industrys awareness of device and network security in next-generation mobile networks.
The industry groups announced, at the recent NGMN Industry Conference in Frankfurt, that they will collaborate to ensure the best security is put in place for devices which will become available in Next Generation Mobile Networks.
Together, the two organisations, which are both made up of leading mobile operators and major manufacturers, will promote industry recommendations on mobile and network security, which in turn, they say, will enable enhanced mobile applications and provide a secure environment for developers, operators and consumers.
The NGMN is a complimentary organisation to the OMTP, says OMTP Managing director, Tim Raby. We have like-minded individuals, a similar membership and a mission to enhance the mobile experience for all parties involved in mobile, from developers to the end user. We hope to raise device security up the agenda, ultimately delivering a better and safer user experience.
NGMN Operating Officer, Peter Meissner, notes that the OMTPs recommendations are valuable and respected within the industry. He says:
The security recommendations are widely seen as the baseline for device security across the industry. Security within the network and device is critical for the NGMN Alliances roadmap especially in the light of the uptake of future mobile applications such as Mobile Web 2.0, Mobile TV and more.
