Openwave Systems has announced the addition of two new services, Openwave Passport and Openwave OpenMedia, to its service management portfolio for operators to enhance and monetise the mobile Internet experience.
Openwave Passport enables mobile operators to tap into new revenue streams by offering on-demand mobile Internet access to consumers. With Openwave Passport, the mobile operator can offer a range of time-based Internet access options (e.g. day-, hour- and week-passes) to the casual mobile Internet user. This type of personalised access can attract new data users, says Openwave, including roaming and visiting subscribers who may not wish to sign up for contract-based data access plans. It is also a way to market value-added services to data subscribers. According to Openwave, the key strength of Passport is its ability to intelligently intercept subscriber-initiated data transactions and offer targeted services that are relevant to the individual user. Openwave Passport is available as an optional service for the Openwave Integra platform, as well as the latest version of the Openwave Mobile Access Gateway (MAG).
Openwave says it is already working with a top North American carrier that has deployed the Passport service to provide users with 24-hour, on-demand full Internet access to premium web content such as games, full news and sports information for a nominal fee.
Openwave OpenMedia is an open, multimedia content adaptation service that is designed to make content more compelling on a mobile device. OpenMedia converts rich media objects like Microsoft Office documents and audio/video clips to a format suitable for mobile handsets. The new format is presented simply and intuitively, as a web page, an image, an appropriately resized media file, or a stream. OpenMedia increases web traffic by improving web usability and customer satisfaction, says Openwave, since users get the content they want, regardless of the format. The OpenMedia service is complementary to Openwaves Openwave OpenWeb service, a mobile content reformatting solution that, according to the company, improves the open Internet browsing experience. OpenMedia and OpenWeb work collaboratively to deliver non-standard objects converted to suitable mobile formats. OpenMedia works on any mobile platform, including Openwaves Integra platform
In order to thrive, operators must capitalise on new opportunities with the mobile internet, delivering a superior experience through value added services and leveraging new service monetisation methods, says Sean MacNeill, Vice President and General Manager for Service Management and Global Services at Openwave. Openwaves mobile Internet services set a new industry standard for experiencing the web on a mobile device, and are driving new opportunities through support of pay as you go mobile Internet and service subscription sign-up models.
