The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has partnered with Orange to develop mHealth innovations to help individuals in developing countries across Africa.
The partnership is intended to to create a framework for mHealth services, for both healthcare workers and the public, that can be scaled and replicated in countries across Africa.
Two of the initial areas of focus are family planning and maternal health. The companies describe a solution for expectant mothers, allowing doctors to remotely monitor the pregnancy and flag up any potential problems early on.
“With the increasing use and decreasing cost of mobile phones, leveraging mobile phone technology to accelerate access to health information and services is a game changer,” said Ariel Pablos-Méndez, USAID’s assistant administrator for global health. “USAID’s partnerships with private companies, such as Orange, enable us to have a larger impact in a cost-effective manner.”
