President Donald Trump has said that Apple is committed to building three manufacturing plants in the US.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, the 45th President of the US said that he had spoken to Apple CEO Tim Cook, who committed to building “three big plants, beautiful plants”.
In May, Apple pledged $1bn to fund advanced manufacturing the US, investing its first $200m in Gorilla Glass-maker Corning – a long-time partner of Apple, which manufactures the displays on iPhone devices.
“We ask ourselves: ‘how can we get more people to do advanced manufacturing in the US?’ And I’m proud to tell you that we’re creating an advanced manufacturing fund. We’re initially putting $1bn into the fund,” Cook said in May.
“We’re really proud to do it. And by doing that, we can be the ripple in the pond. If we can create many manufacturing jobs, those manufacturing jobs create more jobs around them – because you have a service industry that builds up around them.”
Much of Trump’s presidential campaign was centred on bring manufacturing jobs back to the US, and his Apple revelation, combined with the tech giant’s recent pledge, seems to be very feasible. For the time being, however, Apple have refused to comment on whether Trump’s statement is a true one.
Trump met with Cook and other tech CEOs, including Amazons Jeff Bezos and Microsofts Satya Nadella, last month to discuss an overhaul of the governments computer systems and the way it uses technology.
