To no-ones great surprise, publisher brands are rushing to get a piece of the iPad action with the release of iPad applications.
The Guardian has unveiled its Guardian Eyewitness photography app for iPad. The app, produced in association with camera maker Canon, showcases the Guardians Eyewitness news images, which are printed in full colour in the centre spread of the Guardian newspaper each day.
The app showcases the 100 most recent Eyewitness images. Users can save their favourites, and share images with their contacts via email or Facebook. Each image is also accompanied by a pro tip, to give professional insights into the composition or technical specification of a particular image.
To be able to offer an app for the launch of iPad is a fantastic achievement for the Guardian, and demonstrates how we continue to embrace new technologies and explore new ways to showcase and offer our wide range of content to both new and existing audiences, says Emily Bell, Director of Digital Content, Guardian News & Media (GNM). Our Eyewitness images in the Guardian work so well because the photography is given such prominence in the centre spread of the newspaper, and now the iPad will enable users to see these striking images full-screen in a new electronic format, which up until now has never been fully possible on any electronic devices. We hope users enjoy the app and, as ever, were looking forward to hearing the feedback.
