Free wi-fi use over Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day was three times higher than the same period last year and ten times higher than back in 2009.
UK users spent more than 60m minutes connected to The Cloud wi-fi, network, with Christmas Eve seeing the most mobile web activity as shoppers hit pubs after picking up their final gifts.
Traffic was a fifth higher than an average week day and four times higher than the same day last year. It reached its peak in pubs at midnight, when people updated their social media accounts with Christmas messages.
On Boxing Day, pubs saw a similar spike in wi-fi hotspot use, twice as high as last year. While Christmas Day saw wi-fi traffic much lower than an average week day, pubs and restaurants saw usage almost double those seen in 2011.
