Report Analyses Prospects for Mobile Web 2.0

Juniper Research has released its Mobile Web 2.0 report. The study forecasts that the value of presence-based mobile Web 2.0 services will increase to more than $6 billion (3.9 billion) by 2012, finds our new report published this week. An increase in Smartphone penetration in developed markets, allied to rising global usage of both on-net and off-net mobile IM (Instant Messaging) will help to drive this trend, the report says.
Juniper notes that Web 2.0 has been the catalyst for renewed growth in the mobile industry, comprising Presence SMS-based presence (alerts) and server-based presence services; Geolocation services that enable users to share location details with other users, third-parties or applications, collaborate with those nearby, and exploit local knowledge; and the Social Web including social networking sites, user generated content, and a variety of sub-categories including blogs and dating
The report finds that monetising mobile Web 2.0 services is still posing a challenge across the mobile value chain. Nevertheless, it concludes that opportunities exist for service providers across a range of business models, ranging from subscription-based services to ad-funded solutions.
The report includes a series of practical recommendations for mobile web 2.0 players, as well as a detailed SWOT analyses for ODMs (original device manufacturers), mobile network operators, service providers and media & technology owners.
The report includes forecasts and analysis of ad spend on mobile presence-based services, together with operator-billed IM & VoIP revenues, as well as user numbers, usage levels and the proportion of users who pay for services. The report also includes forecasts for the retail costs of SMS and MMS, along with the total global ad spend on mobile Web 2.0 services ,split by social web, dating and presence.
