A report into the mobile health sector has identified a number of business models for creating revenue in health apps.
The report, Mobile Health Market Report 2010-2015, found that mobile health apps should not rely on high download numbers to generate revenue. Instead, practices such as charging for medical services (such as calling a doctor), or “sensor-based models” should be employed, according to research2guidance, the reports authors.
“Sensor based business models seem to have particularly caught the attention of mHealth app publishers over the last six months,” say the report authors. “The idea behind this model is not to sell an app but to use the app to promote the sales of a sensor. Revenue will be generated outside the app store.”
On the consumer side, sensors that monitor health, fitness, and chronic conditions could be promoted with a free app. Apps for health professionals could include diagnosis tools and educational and motivational tools.
“Traditional health care service providers and especially medical device manufacturers should be aware of these trends and start to connect to the smartphone world,” say the report authors.
The report is available for €1,890 (£1,660). You can buy it here.
