RIM Lets Users Generate Free Apps

RIM has launched BlackBerry App Generator, a simple online app-builder, enabling users to build branded apps for BlackBerry smartphones and Tablets, without having to pay any registration or submission fees. The apps can also be integrated with the BBM messaging service, and publishers will be able to generate revenue using the BlackBerry Advertising Service.

Mobile developer Mippin has announced that its app creation platform – which has been used to build over 50,000 apps over the past 18 months – will be powering the App Generator.

The service certainly seems targeted at BlackBerrys weakness in this area – the platform has a relative lack of apps , and is often criticised as being difficult to develop for. Its part of the companys intended comeback, and seems to be pushing in a different direction than what its recent announcement that it would be refocusing in business might suggest.

“With the BlackBerry App Generator it’s now easier than ever for publishers to build and launch an app on BlackBerry App World,” said Nick Barnett, CEO, Mippin. “Whereas creating an app from scratch can cost thousands of pounds and take several months, BlackBerry App Generator is completely free and can deliver a stunning app in less than 10 minutes.”

The platform was announced at the BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Florida, alongside RIM releasing the beta of its developer toolkit, and generally showing off the BlackBerry 10 OS.
