RIM Sheds 10 Per Cent of Workforce

Research In Motion (RIM) has confirmed the extent of the job losses it signalled last month, when it revealed first quarter revenues and profits that were both down on the previous quarter.

2,000 jobs will go as part of the BlackBerry maker’s “cost optimization program”, leaving RIM with a global workforce of 17,000. If our calculator’s working properly then, that’s a hefty 10.5 reduction in the company’s headcount, at a time when Apple and many of the companies supporting Android seem to be going from strength to strength.

RIM describes the workforce reduction as: “a prudent and necessary step for the long term success of the company”, adding that it follows an extended period of rapid growth within the company, whereby the workforce had nearly quadrupled in the last five years alone. (Not sure if that’s supposed to make it seem more reasonable – Ed.)
