Google has released charts tracking the most popular searches throughout the year, with Robin Williams topping the chart as the most searched term globally in the wake of the actors tragic death.

The 2014 World Cup, the West African Ebola crisis, the two crashed Malaysian Airlines flights and the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge rounded out the top five for global searches, with mobile game Flappy Bird placing sixth, the first ever app to enter the top 10.

The iPhone 6 topped searches for consumer electronics this year, but this was the first year since 2009 that an Apple product failed to break into the top 10 overall searches. The iPhone 6 was also the only Apple product in the top five for consumer electronics, with the Samsung Galaxy S5, Nexus 6, Moto G and Samsung Note 4 filling out the top five positions, while the Apple Watch and iPad Air came in eighth and tenth respectively.

In the UK, the World Cup took the top spot for searches, with the iPhone 6, Peaches Geldof and Rik Mayall also placing in the top five. Banks and supermarkets dominated the most searched businesses, although online brands Rightmove and Gumtree topped the list.
