MTS, VimpelCom and Megafon, Russia’s three largest mobile network operators, have ended their contracts with Apple, meaning theyll no longer be offering iPhones to subscribers.
The three operators – which together account for more than four-fifths of the Russian market – have each stopped negotiations with Apple over the last two months, according to a report in The Financial Times. The most likely reason looks to be the penalties Apple enforces for not selling the contracted number of iPhones – most likely 1-1.5m over two or three years.
While Russian consumers will still be able to get their hands on iPhones, from Apple stores or non-operator mobile phone retailers, this certainly makes it more difficult.
