Samsung and Deutsche Telekom have combined in Barcelona to demonstrate the worlds first end-to-end 5G solution.
The live demo, which took place at this years Mobile World Congress show in the Catalan capital, involved the use of two Samsung smartphones to track the precise movements of a robotic arm from two separate angles.
According to Samsung, the demo saw 4K UHD video transmitted over the air, using the companys Ultra High Mobile Broadband (U-MBB) service, which uses Samsungs 60GHz radio access technology.
The demo achieved more than 1.5Gbps on each handset, and the companies claim it proves 5G technology has the potential to power tactile internet applications, which requires lower latency and ultra high throughput.
The tactile internet is said to be the next generation of connectivity, where data speeds allow Internet of Things objects to interact with human senses other than sight and sound.
“We are pleased to have proven the feasibility of 5G technology through this live demonstration with Deutsche Telekom,” says Youngky Kim, president and head of networks business at Samsung Electronics. “It is important for Samsung to take a realistic path towards a 5G world by securing seamless mobility, which will enable people to enjoy immersive experiences such as virtual reality broadcasting services and hologram calls using 5G infrastructures. Samsung will continue its innovation with Deutsche Telekom to bring 5G technology closer to our lives.”
Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, CTO Deutsche Telekom, says the technology is reaching an exciting phase. “As a next step … we will involve customers in the technology development process to bring the technology closer to them and ensure it meets their expectations,” he says.
