Samsung Goes Pop with Top 40 App

Samsung has launched the Official UK Top 40 Chart app, which enables users to play all tracks from the Top 40 on their mobile. The app, powered by mobile music company MusicQubed, is initially launching on the Galaxy Ace II, and updates its roster of tracks – which can each be played an unlimited number of times – on a daily basis.

Tracks are downloaded and cached overnight, during off-peak network times, so they can be played without streaming, buffering or ads. The app also features the option to buy tracks,
celebrity news updates and, as ever, integration with Facebook and Twitter.

The app will be available exclusively on Samsung handsets, and will come preloaded on Samsung Galaxy handsets – its yet another attempt from the manufacturer to differentiate its devices from all the other Android smartphones on the market. After a two month free trial period, users will need to pay a weekly subscription of £1 – which, if its positioned to attract users to Samsung devices, could be a misstep.

Brian Rose, MD of Universal Music UKs commercial division, which worked closely with Samsung on the app, says: “We believe the  Official Top 40 Chart App will excite consumers, increase engagement with music and add value to the incredible devices that Samsung bring to the market. Having a music service with the leading mobile device company in the UK and globally is good news for the UK music industry.”
