Samsung has overtaken Apple for the first time as the top mobile OEM in terms of internet usage.
Thats according to research from StatCounter, which found that Samsung held a 25.5 per cent share of mobile web traffic globally, compared to Apples 25.1 per cent. In third place was Nokia, with a 22 per cent share.
Interestingly, 12 months ago, Nokia was top dog, with a 28 per cent share of traffic. Between December and January – the post-Christmas period – Apple pulled into the lead, which it held for the following six months.
However, Apple continues to hold a clear lead in the US (with a 54.9 per cent share) and UK (48 per cent), however.
Most mobile users still use the browsers that came with their devices, meanwhile, meanwhile, with the Android stock browser accounting for 29 per cent of all mobile web traffic, and iOSs default browser Safari taking second place with 25 per cent. The top installed browser is Opera, with 16 per cent of traffic – though this is actually down from 19.4 per cent a year ago.
In mobile search, Google is still hugely dominant, with a 93.8 per cent referral share – but this has dropped from 96.7 per cent a year ago, with Yahoo! (4.1 per cent, up from 2.0 per cent) and Bing (1.4 per cent, up from 0.7 per cent) both gaining share.
