Samsung Planning More Tizen Smartphones in 2015

samsung zSamsung is planning on launching more handsets running on the firms own Tizen operating system before the end of the year, in the hope of carving out more of a market from Android.

According to Reuters, who quoted a source familiar with the matter, the Tizen smartphones will vary in price and specifications, and are part of the firms strategy to build a Tizen ecosystem, which also includes smartwatches and smart TVs.

The first Tizen smartphone, the Z1, was launched around a year ago, and has been extremely successful in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, where it was the best-selling smartphone in Q1 2015.

The Z1 has also seen success in India, where it has sold 1m handsets so far in the worlds third-biggest smartphone market. However, in order to attract third-party developers to create apps for the operating system, it will need much higher market penetration and a wider user base.

Samsung has declined to comment on the release of any further Tizen smartphones.
