Samsung is planning on launching more handsets running on the firms own Tizen operating system before the end of the year, in the hope of carving out more of a market from Android.
According to Reuters, who quoted a source familiar with the matter, the Tizen smartphones will vary in price and specifications, and are part of the firms strategy to build a Tizen ecosystem, which also includes smartwatches and smart TVs.
The first Tizen smartphone, the Z1, was launched around a year ago, and has been extremely successful in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, where it was the best-selling smartphone in Q1 2015.
The Z1 has also seen success in India, where it has sold 1m handsets so far in the worlds third-biggest smartphone market. However, in order to attract third-party developers to create apps for the operating system, it will need much higher market penetration and a wider user base.
Samsung has declined to comment on the release of any further Tizen smartphones.
