Samsung Prepares to Roll Out Smart Home Range

smartthingsSamsung is gearing up to enter the smart home market with the announcement of a range of products that will aim to compete with Googles Nest and Apples Homekit.

Samsungs offering, SmartThings, will include electrical sockets, sensors and a central hub that connects to a homes internet router, enabling owners to coordinate different appliances.

The platform also includes an intuitive mobile app that enables owners to manage their home while out and about, activating devices, accessing video feeds and monitoring home security.

The SmartThings hub includes a battery backup with 10 hours power, a local app engine for optimised performance and a powerful processor that enables video monitoring. The hub will work with selected Samsung and D-Link cameras, and uses intelligent buffering and motion detection so that only notable incidents are recorded unless users decide otherwise.

“People are beginning to understand the real value and utility smart home technology can provide in their everyday lives,” said Alex Hawkinson, CEO and founder of SmartThings. “With these products, we focused first and foremost on security and home monitoring to help answer the question is everything okay at home?.

“This marks our first product launch as part of the Samsung family, and together were continuing our commitment to deliver the easiest smart home solutions with a truly open Internet of Things platform that maximises collaboration and innovation across the industry.”

Samsung will also be releasing a set of developer tools and introducing a partnership program that will enable deeper integrations and collaboration across the platform and within the industry at large. The platform is integrated with GitHub, and already supports almost 200 compatible devices.
