Samsung has revealed its latest smartwatch, the Gear S2, which aims to compete with the Apple Watch and boasts a significantly revamped design with a round screen.
The smartwatch is available in two different options, the Gear S2 and Gear S2 classic, with an elegant black finish and matching leather band. The device has a rotating bezel aimed at enabling easier navigation and interaction, along with the standard home and back buttons.
As with the original Gear smartwatch, users can choose to purchase 3G connectivity with the device, enabling the watch to operate in a limited way independent of a phone thanks to an e-SIM with voice capability.
“For the past several years, Samsung has pioneered and advanced the wearable category, bringing brave new concepts to the smart wearables market,” said JK Shin, CEO and head of Samsungs IT & Mobile business.
“The Samsung Gear S2 reflects Samsungs most progressive innovation. It is the perfect complement for any occasion, easily taking you from day to night, from work to workout – and ensuring that you get more out of every moment in your day, by making it smarter and ultimately more personal and fun.”
The watch runs on Samsungs own Tizen software, much like its predecessor, and according to the company, there will be apps and watchfaces that are optimised specifically to work with the S2s round design.
Both the 3G-enabled version of the watch and the more standard model include NFC, which means that youll likely be able to use them in combination with Samsung Pay when both have launched, mirroring one of the most popular features of the Apple Watch.
Samsung hasnt announced when the Gear S2 will be available to buy or even pre-order yet, and also hasnt revealed any prices, but the device will be showcased at the IFA conference in Berlin later this week, giving people their first hands-on experience with what Samsung is surely hoping is a worthy competitor to the Apple Watch.
