Samsung Shooting for Half a Billion Handsets Shipped in 2013

Samsung intends to ship a record 510m handsets next year – a 20 per cent increase from its estimated shipping total for 2012.

According to a Korea Times report, 390m of those will be smartphones, leaving 120m feature phones and budget handsets. This will drive the profits of Samsung’s handset division to a projected 21 trillion Korean won (£12.2bn), up from 19 trillion won in 2012.

According to a Samsung spokesperson, the Korean manufacturer will be driving this growth by targeting developing markets, and rolling out more affordable LTE devices in the West. The growth will be supported by an investment of $2.2bn by 2020 in its Vietnamese factories, which will account for nearly half of the devices manufactured.
