Samsung Tempts App Devs with 80/20 Revenue Deal

Samsung has dropped the amount of in-app revenue it takes from developers in a bid to encourage more companies to build apps for its platform.

The company has reduced its charge on in-app revenues from 30 per cent, the amount taken by both Apple and Google, to 20 per cent, giving devs 80 per cent of their profit to take home. The rate does not apply to paid-for apps.

Its not clear how many Samsung apps there are, but its Apps Store is rarely featured in comparative lists of downloads or revenue, with many analysts rating Windows Phone and even BlackBerry as more significant.

Of the top two, Google Play, buoyed by the huge numbers of Android users worldwide, sees more downloads than Apple but still trails in terms of revenue. Samsung, the largest manufacturer shipping with the Android OS, is clearly keen to a share of revenues from Google.
